Greensburg, In. — The Greensburg Rotary Club continues its tradition of honoring local citizens whose lives have followed the Object of Rotary International, by naming two local residents Paul Harris Fellows. This recognition acknowledges that the Greensburg Rotary club has contributed $1,000 each to the Rotary Foundation in the recipient’s name. To date, this local effort has seen the Greensburg Rotary Club contribute over $33,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
Two outstanding selections were honored as the newest Paul Harris Fellows by the Greensburg Rotary Club, as a result of nominations submitted on behalf of the recipients.
Accepting their award Monday at a special Rotary evening meeting at the home of Rotarians Bev and Larry Moore, were Sheila Doerflinger and Pat Smith.
Sheila Doerflinger was nominated by Barb Jakad, who in part wrote in the application: “Sheila is a fine example of someone who lives by the Rotary 4-Way Test. Besides being truthful, fair and beneficial in her service to the community, she undoubtedly builds goodwill and better friendships in doing so.”
Doerflinger has been very active in the Greensburg/Decatur County community as a strong supporter of the Decatur County Family YMCA; a member of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization); the St. Mary’s funeral meal committee; long-time volunteer for the Greensburg Daily News Cheer Fund; volunteer for the Decatur County United Fund; managing the gift shop and its staff at Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
Pat Smith, perhaps best known for her musings in the Greensburg Daily News, was nominated by three people including Mary Lou Davis, Melina Ann Fox and Roger DuMond.
“Pat has been and continues to be a role model for community engagement,” according to the nomination letters. “Pat Smith’s profession as a journalist for 40 years at the Greensburg Daily News has peaked our interests and inspired us to know more about local history, the service of our brave Veterans, organizations and individuals making a positive difference, and the list is endless. Pat reminds us to treat animals humanely, and Pat lives here life with integrity and authenticity… she is a “Rock of Gibraltar” in our community… She is the voice of all that is good about the Greensburg area… Just getting to know Pat is a benefit to all concerned.”
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; high ethical standards in business and professions … as an opportunity to serve society; the application of the idea of service…; the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through fellowship. The nominees should also follow the Rotary 4-way Test, which states: “Of the things we think, say and do: First, is it the truth; second, is it fair to all concerned; third, will it build goodwill and better friendships; and fourth, will it be beneficial to all concerned.
