Rep. Frye’s jail overcrowding bill signed into law

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Legislation authored by State Representative Randy Frye of Greensburg that is aimed at helping alleviate local jail overcrowding has been signed into law by Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Frye said under the new law, counties will establish a local or regional justice reinvestment advisory council to review criminal justice systems, policies, and procedures. Local councils and the state Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council will then evaluate local jail overcrowding and recommend solutions.

“Crowded jails continue to impact local budgets and divert money away from other investments like infrastructure and education,” Frye said. “This is an issue that affects our entire criminal justice system, from prosecutors and courts to judges and law enforcement, and I remain committed to giving our communities the tools they need to address it.”

Frye, who chairs the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and Public Safety, said the new law will have the state council work with local councils to promote evidence-based practices and implement recidivism-reduction programs such as probation services, and mental health, and addiction treatment and recovery services.
