Batesville, In. — A $5000 check from Ray Township in Franklin County was recently sent to Safe Passage. Safe Passage is a domestic and sexual violence victim support services provider with a shelter in Batesville that serves six counties, including Franklin County.
“We are very grateful to Ray Township for considering Safe Passage with funding. This allows us to continue to serve some of our neediest residents with not just safety, but day to day living. At Safe Passage, we not only provide emergency shelter, but a means to get their life on track, away from violence, for them and their children. Counselors assist with safety planning, legal advocacy, children’s programming, plus further education, jobs and housing applications,” said Jane Yorn, Executive Director of Safe Passage.
No one is forced out of shelter until they have a safe place, and sometimes this can take weeks, even months. This township funding will sustain those services.
Townships primarily assist with fire protection, emergency response and poor relief, the last two aligned with Safe Passage’s mission. Trustee John Livers Sr. said the three-member Ray advisory board saw the need and services provided by Safe Passage and approved a township contract.
Last year, Safe Passage served some 1223 people either through the shelter, the non-residential programming or toll-free line. The majority of these victims are low income and do not have adequate resources or support available to transform their lives. All services are free and confidential. “Thank you to Ray Township for helping us build a safer and healthier community,” Yorn added.
