Felony cases up for 2018 in Ripley County

Versailles, In. — Crime trends in Ripley County are getting off to a concerning start for 2018. Data from prosecutor Ric Hertel shows Felony 6 and Felony 5 cases are on pace to set records, while Juvenile delinquency cases are at record lows.

Through the end of April in 2018, 112 Level 6 Felony cases have been filed, compared to 245 for the entire 2017. Level 6 Felony cases are typically drug-related, theft and operating while intoxicated offenses. Sentencing ranges from 6-months to 2 ½ years for a Level 6 Felony conviction.

During the same period, 19 Level 5 Felony cases have been filed compared to 50 total in 2017.  Examples of Level 5 Felony charges are sex crimes, reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter, drug dealing and burglary/robbery. Sentencing ranges from one to six years.
