Dr. James Richard Hermanson, PhD, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Denver, Colorado, on March 19, 1948, James was one of seven children and grew up with a love of learning and craftsmanship that would shape his life’s journey.
He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, later running a successful handmade furniture business with his dad (Harry Hermanson) in Helena, Montana. His passion for science led him to pursue further education at the University of Cincinnati, where he earned his master’s and PhD in organic chemistry.
Jim dedicated much of his career to teaching organic chemistry, inspiring students at Wittenberg University, Penn State University, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Ivy Tech Community College. His kindness, patience, and deep knowledge left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Outside of his academic and professional achievements, Jim was a man of many talents and passions. He loved playing piano, gardening, reading, and cooking. His famous marinara sauce, whose secret ingredient was a closely guarded family treasure, was a favorite at several family gatherings. He also loved Jesus dearly and spent much of his time in scripture, studying the word of God.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Hermanson; his son, Nathan (Sara) Hermanson; and his cherished grandchildren, Daniel and Edith Hermanson. He will be remembered for his warm heart, curious mind, and the quiet wisdom he generously shared.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and learning. Jim also reminds us, in life and in death, his favorite scripture found in Psalms 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God…”
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23, 4:30 – 7:30pm, at the Forest Park Senior Center, 11555 Winton Road, Cincinnati, OH 45240.
Please feel free to leave a memory or message of comfort for Jim’s family in the online guestbook.
