Doris Irene (Lomax) Klene died peacefully on March 28, 2025, in the company of family. She was 98 years old.
Doris was born in Bury St. Edmonds, England on July 30, 1926, to Agnes and Henry Lomax, and was the second youngest of fifteen children. She met her husband Ralph during WWII when he was stationed in England as part of the Army Air Corp. They married on April 2, 1945, just three months after they met. That November, Ralph was transferred home and it would be another five months before Doris could join him in America. After she arrived by ship into New York and completed her processing, she was assigned an escort for her train trip to Greensburg where Ralph and his dad were waiting for her. Adjusting to life in a new country and without her parents and siblings was difficult at first but Ralph’s family was very supportive, and they had a loving marriage for forty-two years until Ralph passed away in 1986.
Doris loved flowering plants and was an avid gardener. She was also an extraordinary seamstress, a skill she acquired first from her mother and then from her time working in a factory making military uniforms during the war. Perhaps her most enjoyable role though was being a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. To all of them she was loving and attentive, and she set a constant example of optimism and perseverance.
Doris is survived by her children: Sandy and her husband Steve of Savannah Tennessee; Roger and his wife Debbie of Brownsville Vermont; Laura of Greensburg; and Robin and his wife Lynne of Greensburg, as well as a total of nine grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg on Monday, March 31, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The funeral and burial will take place immediately following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through their website.
