
(Westport, IN) – From the “Something you don’t see everyday” file: Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies were called over the weekend to Westport after someone reported an alligator along a road.
A caller contacted Decatur County Dispatch around 2:53 p.m. Saturday to report a possible alligator sighting in a ditch on the 100 block of West Sycamore Street. They told dispatch the gator went into a storm drain.
Deputies Pat Richards and Devin Workman, along with crews from the Westport Street and Water departments, were able to get the 3 ½ foot long alligator out of the storm drain around 4:52 p.m. without harm to the animal or bystanders.
The alligator was transferred taken to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office where Indiana Conservation Officers Steve Kinne and Shiloh Mast picked it up and transferred the animal to a certified wildlife rehabilitator.
