Decatur County Council tables food and beverage tax discussion indefinitely

(Greensburg, IN) – Decatur County Council voted 4-3 Tuesday night to table the food and beverage tax discussion indefinitely.

This came after a previous motion by councilmember Melanie Nobbe to postpone a vote on the matter until the February meeting to give the public the opportunity to review various designs for the new aquatic center that were presented by the project’s general contractor, RL Turner Corporation.

Nobbe, Ashley Emsweller Hungate, and Deanna Burkart voted to table until next month, while Ernie Gauck, Kenny Hooten, Bill Metz and council president Danny Peters voted no.

Hooten then made a motion to table the food and beverage vote altogether, and was joined in the majority by Gauck, Metz and Peters to put discussions on hold.

Councilmembers Nobbe, Emsweller Hungate and Burkart voted against.

The aim of the one-percent food and beverage tax was to help fund construction of an aquatic center to replace Allen Memorial Pool.

As a result of Tuesday night’s action, it would take a two-thirds vote for County Council to revive the food and beverage tax discussion.
