(Greensburg, IN) – At Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH), the connection between team members and the community runs deep, and for one nurse, that bond has flourished into something truly special.
Not only was Susan Robbins born at DCMH herself, but she has had the privilege of mentoring colleagues whose births she assisted with at DCMH—two of whom are now preparing to welcome their own children.
Watching them grow in both their careers and personal lives has been a rewarding reminder of the strength and continuity of care that defines DCMH.
“It’s been incredible to watch four of my colleagues—Casey Bierhaus, Laura Davidson, Katie Egielske, and Garrett Knoll—flourish in their roles as healthcare workers,” said Susan. “It’s a beautiful circle of care now seeing two of them prepare to become parents themselves!”
These healthcare workers’ stories reflect the deep-rooted bonds that make DCMH more than just a hospital—it’s a place where compassionate care empowers both patients and the professionals who care for them.
“I love knowing that our journey together is full of so many moments, and I get to continue learning from Susan as we watch my little one grow,” said Casey. “So many of my biggest life moments have happened here—I was born here, got my first job here, met my husband here, got engaged here, and now in just a few months, we’ll bring our baby into the world here. It’s amazing to have all these memories in one place with this team.”
At DCMH, strong relationships grow and a deep sense of community continues to bloom—fueled by a support system built on trust, experience, and shared purpose.
“Being born here and now working here with Susan is surreal,” said Garrett. “It’s amazing to think that my fiancé Tori and I will be celebrating our baby’s arrival at DCMH this September—and since I’m a September baby too, it feels like I’m getting the ultimate birthday gift this year!”
To celebrate their growing families, DCMH’s Rewards & Recognition Committee gifted each expecting parent a tiny DCMH onesie—part of a heartfelt new tradition to welcome the next generation of little ones into the DCMH family. For over 100 years, DCMH has been a place where generations have found strength in care, where families grow, and where dedicated professionals empower one another.
“We call Susan ‘Mama Suz’ because she’s been like a mentor and mother figure to so many of us growing in our roles here at DCMH,” said Katie. “Susan has been someone we can go to whenever we need something, and we can rely on her for any help that we may need. We even got her a sweatshirt that says ‘Emergency Mama’ a few years ago—we’ll have to get a new one that says ‘Emergency Mamaw’ in just a few months.”
At DCMH, teamwork is more than just working side by side—it’s about uplifting one another to be the best caregivers, colleagues, and community members possible.
“I’m proud to be part of a team that truly cares—both for each other, like family, and for our community,” said Laura. “This isn’t just a job; it’s about giving back to the place and the people who mean so much to me. Susan cared for me as a newborn, and now she’s helped shape me into the nurse I am today. She’s been such a big part of our lives.”
From guiding new nurses to empowering new parents, DCMH remains a place where lifelong bonds are formed and care extends far beyond hospital walls.
“If you’re expecting or planning to grow your family, I’d love to encourage you to explore the excellent pregnancy care available right here at DCMH,” said Susan. “They’re here to support you every step of the way.”
