Dan Helcher, 73 years old of Bright, IN passed away Tuesday morning, April 30, 2024. Many will remember Dan and his wife, Merry, who drove a school bus for Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools for 37 years. They drove the regular morning and afternoon bus route, in addition to field trips and volleyball games. Others will remember Dan from his coaching days. He coached his daughter’s club volleyball team as well as the Oldenburg team. Others still will remember Dan from his days on the Tri-Township Water Board of Directors. As if that didn’t keep Dan busy enough, he also worked as a carpet layer. It comes as no surprise that Dan knew a lot of people and was well liked throughout the community. Everywhere Dan and his family went, it was sure to take just a little bit longer as Dan would run into someone he knew and enjoy talking with them. When it was time for a Helcher vacation, Dan and his family would pack up the RV and go camping. They enjoyed hitting spots anywhere from Michigan to Florida.
Dan will be deeply missed by Merry, his wife of 42 years; his daughter Jennifer (Chad) Helcher, and his sister, Diane Helcher. He is preceded in death by his first wife Becky; sons Nathan and Kyle; and parents Marjorie and Melvin Helcher.
A memorial service honoring Dan’s life will be held Friday, May 10 from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at Andres-Wuestefeld Funeral Home. Dan enjoyed a casual lifestyle and would have wanted his service to reflect his personality so everyone is encouraged to dress casual. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Friends of Franklin County Animal Shelter. Donations will be accepted at the memorial service or can be mailed to the funeral home.
