Dale August Riedeman, 76, of Greensburg, entered into eternal peace January 4, 2023, at Fairfield Mercy Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio with his family by his side.
Born May 9, 1946, Dale was one of 11 children of the late Omer and Gertrude (Werner) Riedeman. He was a proud member of the Greensburg Community High School Class of 1964.
Dale was a member of St. Mary’s Church, and a former member of the Greensburg Knights of Columbus. He was a proud lifelong Decatur County farmer. He drove countless students for Greensburg Community School Corporation until he retired after 38 years. He worked many years as a Tool and Die Maker at American Lifts, Acro, Houck Industries, and Custom Conveyor.
Dale’s love of sports was evident through his impressive knowledge of sports statistics. He loved watching the Colts and Reds, and everyone knew he was the Boilermakers biggest fan. This made for a true “house divided” when his daughter went off to IU to study medicine. He never did wear his “IU DAD” shirt but kept the matching button pin hidden in his briefcase.
Dale loved the outdoors, mowing, riding the 4-wheeler and golf cart, and going for drives to check the fields and rain gauges. He was known as the local meteorologist and could always update you on what the weather was going to do and where the cheapest gas was. He was an avid reader of the Farmers’ Almanac. He believed the only color that belonged on a tractor was Persian Orange, even though he thought his son’s-in-law green one was “pretty neat.” His dad’s antique Allis Chalmers Tractors were his most prized possessions besides his grandchildren. They adoringly gave him his favorite title of “papaw.”
Survivors include his son, Dana (Savanna) Riedeman; daughter, Jessica (Derek) Hunter; and his grandchildren who brought him so much joy and light: Oliver Hunter, Henry Hunter, and Emersyn Riedeman. He is also survived by his siblings: David (Judy) Riedeman, Robert “Jake” (Darlene) Riedeman, Rosanne Noah, SR. M. Sefapano MC (MariBeth Riedeman) Rome, Italy, Paul (Jae) Riedeman, Carl Riedeman, Joyce (Dennis) Holtkamp, Julie (Brad) Reed, Omer “Butch” (Joan) Riedeman, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Omer and Gertrude (Werner) Riedeman; brother, Dennis Riedeman; nephew, Adam Holtkamp; and brother-in-law, Dennis Noah.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg at 11:00am on Monday, January 9, 2023, with Father John Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for Dale will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023, from 9:30AM until the time of funeral. Rosary will be prayed at 9:00AM prior to visitation in the sanctuary at St. Mary’s Church.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made, through the funeral home, to: St. Mary’s Catholic School or the Decatur County Memorial Hospital Pink Ribbon Fund.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all the staff at DCMH, especially Dr. Mary McCullough and Scott Chasteen and our friends at Morning Breeze for the excellent care you provided to our Dad. We’re forever grateful.
