Batesville girls golf finished ninth at Monday’s IHSAA State Preview at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel. The Bulldogs as a team shot a 351. Individually, Ava Smith carded a 78 to lead Batesville. A total of 16 teams participated.

The Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Reds 4-1 last night in downtown Cincinnati in a game heard on WRBI. The Reds held a 1-0 lead with two outs in the 8th inning before the Phillies erupted for all four runs. The highlight of that frame was former Indiana Hoosier Kyle Schwarber’s National League-leading 42nd home run of the season, a two-run drive just inside the right field foul pole that proved to be the knockout punch. Lefty Andrew Abbott started for the Reds and was in command for most of the game, including retiring the first 12 batters he faced. Abbott was tagged with the loss and is now 8-3 with a 2.41 earned run average in 21 starts this season. He gave up three earned runs on six hits over 7 2/3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts.  The loss moved the 62-58 Reds another half-game behind the New York Mets, who now hold a two-game lead over them for the final NL Wild Card berth. The Reds look to even the series tonight against the NL East-leading Phillies. Righthander Brady Singer starts for Cincinnati. He’ll be opposed by lefthander Ranger Suarez. Coverage begins at 6:10 on 103.9.

The Reds have returned righthanded pitcher Ian Gibaut from rehab assignment, retroactive to last Saturday. Gibaut has been out since late June with a right shoulder impingement.

The WNBA’s Indiana Fever are back in action tonight at home against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings. Tipoff is at 7:30.

The Fever have added Odyssey Sims to the roster because a depleted crop of point guards has become an issue again. Despite the losses of Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, they were able to beat Chicago over the weekend despite not having a point guard on the floor. Still, to address the hole on the roster, head coach Stephanie White says Sims will be a good addition to the team. Caitlin Clark remains sidelined with an injured groin.

Both the Indiana Hoosiers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish are ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 College Football Poll. Notre Dame came in 6th while Indiana is 20th. The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the preseason Top 25, most ever by a conference and one more than a year ago. The SEC has four teams in the top 10 for the second straight year. The Big Ten, which has won the past two national championships, has two of the top three teams in the poll for the third straight year and six in the Top 25 for the third year in a row. Notre Dame is in the preseason top 10 for the third time in four years. Indiana is ranked in the preseason AP poll for just the fourth time in program history. Indiana’ opens the season August 30 at home against Old Dominion. Notre Dame starts the season August 31 at Miami (FL).

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for their second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. So far, Anthony Richardson has not shown signs of being hampered by his injured finger, which he sustained last week against at Baltimore. He’s been practicing each day of camp since then. Left guard Quinton Nelson told the media on Monday that it’s been cool seeing both Richardson and Daniel Jones go at it, but also rooting each other on for the betterment of the team.
