(Decatur County, IN) – On the heels of Decatur County Council’s 4-3 vote to indefinitely suspend discussion on the proposed food and beverage tax on Tuesday night, two of the councilmembers who were in the minority on that vote have filed to run for seats as Decatur County Commissioners in the May Republican Primary.
Melanie Nobbe is running for the District 1 seat now held by Tony Blodgett.
Soon-to-be retired Greensburg Assistant Fire Chief Brian Wenning has also filed to run for that seat.
Wenning was one of the candidates who ran to fill the vacancy last year when Commissioner Chuck Emsweller passed away.
Blodgett won the seat at a Republican Party caucus, and has filed to run for a full term.
Meanwhile, County Councilmember Deanna Burkart is running in the May Primary against incumbent District 3 Commissioner Mark Koors.
Burkart released a statement following Tuesday night’s meeting on why she’s seeking the post.
“In my five years on the County Council, I’ve heard over and over that this community needs more entertainment and amenities for our families and youth. I’ve also listened to constituents describe a prosperous, vibrant, and flourishing future for Decatur County,” Burkart said. “Decatur County deserves Professionalism, Planning, and Prosperity, not half measures and kicking the can down the road. I intend to honor our past without being stuck in the past. I believe we can preserve our small town feel while dreaming big.”
Those wishing to run in the Primary have until Noon on February 9 to file the necessary paperwork.
The 2024 Primary Election is set for Tuesday, May 7.
