(Batesville, IN) – Batesville City Council discussed golf carts being driven on walking and biking trails Monday night.

City attorney Blaine Timonera says they’ve received reports from residents about golf carts and other motorized vehicles – including cars – being driven on the newly-developed trail along State Road 129.

He says the city ordinance prohibits vehicles from traveling on sidewalks, and a trail equates to that.

Timonera says the trail is intended for pedestrian traffic such as walkers, joggers as well as bicycles.

Councilmember Darrick Cox says, with the advent of battery powered and electronically powered bikes and scooters, the city probably needs to evaluate the ordinance.

Timonera says the city’s definition of a vehicle was drafted in 1980, and that there’s currently no clear guidance on enforcement when it comes to e-bikes.
