On a beautiful Friday night, the Chargers won their 6th straight Civil War “Bucket” game to make Coach Steve Stirn the winningest coach in Charger Football history. The Bucker has resided at North Decatur since 2016, but the teams have only played 6 games in those years, with the 2021 game being canceled due to COVID.
Despite an early error that gave the Cougars a short field and the opening points of the game, the Chargers rallied back, answering with a score of their own in the first quarter and two unanswered scores in the second quarter. The Cougars would find the end zone again in the third quarter when a punt snap flew over Mason Morris’ head and gave the Cougars another short-field situation. The Chargers would again answer that score with their own in the third, followed again by two more unanswered scores in the fourth quarter. The Chargers had 423 yards of total offense with 271 rushing yards and 152 passing yards. The Cougars had 103 yards of total offense with 88 yards on the ground and 15 yards in the air. Seniors Kaleb Phelps and Kaden Muckerheide led the Chargers’ rushing game. Mason Morris was 8 of 10 with no interceptions. Xander Jones and Kaleb Phelps led the Chargers defensively. This win is Steve Stirn’s 66th win at North Decatur – making him the winning coach in school history. The Chargers next face conference opponent Eastern Hancock.
