Canine influenza notice issued in Indiana

Batesville, In. — The Indiana State Board of Animal Health is warning residents about the possibility of canine influenza. Although Indiana has only reported a handful of cases, neighboring states have reported many more.

The highly contagious disease can be transmitted by respiratory secretions from other dogs. The first sign of infection is typically a cough followed by fatigue, eye discharge and decreased appetite. Immediate treatment is recommended.

The sickness is not known to have any effect on humans.
