(Batesville, IN) – The Batesville Police Department says officers are conducting patrols in school zones and following district buses making their routes this school year.
The additional patrols are made possible by funding from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
You’re asked to report unsafe driving around buses and schools.
State law prohibits the passing of a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.
Traffic in both directions on undivided highways must stop when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
All streets and roads in the Batesville area, including the four-lane section of State Road 46, are undivided and drivers must brake for the stop arm.
You’re also reminded that the area around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit.
Police say children walking to and from the bus are usually comfortable with their surroundings and more likely to take risks, ignore hazards, or fail to look both ways when crossing the street.
