(Batesville, IN) – The Batesville Middle School Interact Club concluded the school year with a fundraiser to benefit the Carson Hughes Memorial Fund.
The Interact Club’s purpose is to instill leadership skills and promote community service. The group voted to support Carson’s fund to show his family that we care, to acknowledge Carson’s exceptional character in pursuit of his academic, athletic, photography, and community goals, and to inspire our student body to be a little more like Carson.
Thirteen teams participated and contributed donations in the hopes of having the opportunity to play volleyball vs. the BMS staff team.
A total of $2,561.36 was raised overall with the team appropriately named #BeLIkeCarson raising the most with a total of $980 collected.
The main event took place on the last student day with the whole student body present.
Carson’s Dad, Jason Hughes, unexpectedly attended the event, addressed the students, and accepted the check on behalf of his family. His heartfelt message was impactful for the students as you could visibly see many of them fighting emotions in the stands. He encouraged students to slow down, be present in the moment, and not take anything for granted.
Immediately following, the top seven fundraising teams played in front of the student body. All of the volleyball games were spirited and competitive, especially the grand finale vs. the BMS staff. Dressed in their coordinated t-shirts donated by parent Courtney Bohman, the #BeLikeCarson team put up a good fight falling just short of the BMS staff team.
In the most poignant part of the day, the BMS students spontaneously began to chant “Be like Carson!” at the conclusion of the event.
The BMS Interact Club is proud to show our support to the Hughes family and to encourage members of the community to donate to the Carson Hughes Memorial Fund at any Napoleon State Bank location.
