Bessie Phillips, 94, of Versailles, formerly of Delaware passed away at 4pm, Monday, February 1, 2021 at the home of her daughter near Osgood. She was born in West Harrison, Indiana on April 7, 1926 the daughter of Edward and Margretta Bourquein Stokes. She was married to James Phillips and he preceded her in death. Survivors include four daughters Hope Asche of Versailles, Ruth (Mike) Raymer of Anderson, Jamie (Jerry) Gambrel of Crothersville, and Tamie (Bill) Vornheder of Osgood; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Kenneth Beard, daughter Mary Margaret Beard, her sisters Jeanette Heinzelman and Florence Kennett, and her brothers Herman, Rolla, John, and Herbert Stokes. Bessie was a former employee of the Milan Tavern, Milan Furniture Factory, and Mr. Fred’s in Osgood. She enjoyed her garden and tending to her flowers, and would do karaoke when the opportunity presented itself. Bessie attended the Washington Baptist Church and the Delaware United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 11:30am at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bessie’s son-in-law Jerry Gambrel officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will also be on Thursday beginning at 10:30am. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of the funeral home.
