Berneta Joy (Shinkle) Wafford, 80, of Dillsboro passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Envive Healthcare in Lawrenceburg with her loving family by her side. Berneta was born on Tuesday, January 30, 1945, in Covington, Kentucky; daughter of Henry and Mary Ann (Craddock) Shinkle. Berneta married the love of her life, Thomas “Tom” Wafford, on March 19, 1966, and he survives her. She worked for Dearborn County Hospital in central supply. She was a member of the Dearborn Baptist Church, and she enjoyed helping and serving others. Berneta enjoyed cooking and sewing. Most of all Berneta cherished time spent with her family, which she loved dearly.
Berneta will be missed by her husband Tom Wafford of Dillsboro; children Glenn (Melissa) Wafford of Aurora, Gregory Wafford of Louisville, Garry (Melisa) Wafford of North Port, Florida, and Gail (Jason) Wyatt of Lawrenceburg; brothers Grayson (Pam) Shinkle of Lawrenceburg, Kenneth Shinkle of Dillsboro, and Gordon (Ruth) Shinkle of Milan; grandchildren Ty, Josh, Caleb, Patrick, Mindi Sue, Joel, Jeremiah, Hannah, Leah, Rebekah, Micah, Josiah, Blake, Emma, Hayley, Brooke, and Makayla; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Berneta was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Mary Ann Shinkle.
Family and friends may gather in remembering Berneta from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM, Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Dearborn Baptist Church: 9638 IN-48, Aurora, IN 47001. Services will follow at 12:00 PM with Pastor Gordon Shinkle and Pastor Darrell Sparks officiating. Burial will take place at Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials may be given in honor of Berneta to Dearborn Baptist Church Missionary Fund.
