Despite a 7-run deficit in the fifth inning, Batesville varsity baseball made a comeback but ultimately fell short, losing 8-6 to Union County on Tuesday. Batesville scored five runs in the failed comeback on a triple by Eli Loichinger, a single by Alex Baumer, and a double by Jack Grunkemeyer.
The Bulldogs couldn’t keep up with Union County early in the game. The Patriots scored on an error and a single by Josh Klein in the first inning.
The Patriots opened up scoring in the first inning when an error scored one run for Union County Patriots Varsity.
Batesville would then put up five runs in the seventh inning. Loichinger, Baumer, Grunkemeyer, and Max Baumer all moved runners across the plate with RBI in the inning.
Union County would answer, scoring five runs in the fifth inning. The big inning for the Patriots came thanks to singles by Mason Stewart and Coleton Wicker, a groundout by Devyn Shepherd, and an error on a ball put in play by Gavin Davis.
Baumer took the loss on the moundfor Batesville, surrendering three runs on six hits over three innings, striking out three and walking zero.
Grunkemeyer went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs in hits.
Union County tallied 13 hits. Eric Burdine, Wicker, and Klein all collected multiple hits for the Patriots. Burdine led the team with four hits in four at-bats.
