GREENSBURG, Ind. – A Greensburg woman is facing allegations of battering an infant that was in her care.
An investigation was launched after the child’s mother discovered unexplained bruises on the 11-month old.
According to the Greensburg Daily News, the mother found the bruises after picking the child up from the home of the babysitter, identified as 24-year-old Stephanie Barrett.
The newspaper reports that Barrett is alleged to have told the infant’s mother that the child had a rash on his back.
The infant was later taken to the hospital where nurses determined the marks were bruises, not a rash.
Police say Barrett admitted to spanking the infant and acknowledged it was not the appropriate action.
Decatur County Prosecutors have charged Barrett with felony Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Bodily Injury and felony Battery on a Person Less Than 14 years Old.
An initial court appearance is scheduled for December 17.
Hospital staff said the child had no internal injuries and police say the infant did not appear to be in pain, the newspaper reports.
