(Greensburg, IN) – Greensburg Rotary Club #3437 in District #6580 honored retired Greensburg Community High School counselor Sue Auffenberg with its prestigious Educator of the Year Award.

The presentation was held Friday evening at the Greensburg Pirates football game against Greenfield-Central (pictured).

In 2022, Auffenberg was named Indiana High School Counselor of the Year by the Indiana Counseling Association.

The ICA chooses an elementary, middle school, and high school counselor from nominations across the state, and then for their Fall Conference in November an overall “Counselor of the Year” is chosen.

Those counselors are nominated by other counselors, school principals, and peers, and the winners are selected per the number of nominations each receives.

Auffenberg graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health before earning a Master’s in counseling.

She began her teaching career at Greensburg Community High School in 1979 as a P.E. and Health teacher. In 1990, she became a high school counselor and has been in that position for 33 years, with a total of 44 years with the Greensburg Community School system.

She has served on the Decatur County Community Foundation, Early College High School Leadership Team, IUPUI Advisory Board, Indiana Association of College Admissions Counseling, Indiana High School Counseling Association, and American School Counseling Association, among others. She established the CNA program at GCHS.

Greensburg Rotarians making the presentation included District Governor-Elect Mandy Lohrum, Greensburg Rotary Club President Rob DeHoff, Past District Governor Jerry Fox, Steve Freeman, Educator of the Year Chairperson Tami Wenning, Jenni Hanna, Lora Williams, and Larry Moore.

For the Educator of the Year award, the Greensburg Rotary Club reviews all nominations and the recognition is presented based on the following criteria: his or her dedication to the teaching profession, the nominee’s years of service to the profession, his or her ability to motivate students, his or her image as a role model for students, and his or her contributions to the education community including professional honors or awards.

Greensburg Rotary Club #3437 belongs to Rotary International District #6580, which consists of Rotary Clubs in the southern half of Indiana.

The Rotary Club meets at 12 p.m. on Mondays in the Community Room at Decatur County REMC.
