Amendment Added to Property Tax Bill

(Statehouse) – The amendment to the Property Tax Bill (SB 1) put forth by Indiana House Republicans does not exactly provide the kind of relief that Gov. Mike Braun was hoping for.

But House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) says it will provide nine in 10 Hoosiers with some relief.

“We had two major goals in crafting this bill: deliver immediate relief to homeowners and reform the system to prevent the dramatic spikes in property taxes we’ve seen in recent years,” Huston said.

The amendment would provide a 7.5 percent tax credit on Homestead property taxes up to $200.

It also calls for credits for senior citizens and disabled veterans, and a two thirds property tax deduction for homeowners by 2031.

If the amendment makes it out of the House Ways and Means Committee, it goes back to the Senate.

Gov. Braun wanted to see tax rates revert to pre-2021 levels.

It’s not clear if he’ll sign the bill.
