Area counties see increase, state experiences January unemployment dip

SOUTHEASTERN IN — All four area counties saw an increase in unemployment in January, despite a drop in the state’s jobless rate.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says Ripley County had 2.3 percent unemployment for the month; Franklin and Dearborn counties both checked in at 2.2 percent, and Decatur County had the lowest rate at 2.1 percent in January.

The month before, Dearborn County was at 1.3 percent, Ripley and Decatur counties were both at 1.2, and Franklin County checked in at 1.1 percent in December.

However, all four local counties were still below the state average in January.

The state’s jobless January jobless rate was 2.4 percent, which was down from 2.7 the month before.
