MILAN, Ind — The Milan Alumni Award is awarded to a Milan High School graduate that has made significant accomplishments in their field or vocation.
This year’s recipient is Mr. Gene White.
Gene is a 1954 graduate of Milan and was a member of the state championship basketball team.
After graduation, Gene attended Franklin College and was a member of their basketball team and was later elected into the Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame.
After graduating from Franklin, Gene served 2 years in the US Army.
Gene became a high school teacher and basketball coach, teaching for over 40 years at Milan, Batesville, and Franklin HS. 18 of those years Gene spent teaching physics and Math at Milan while coaching the boys basketball team to the 1985 Sectional championship.
Gene also spent many of those years teaching at the college level with 25 years at Franklin College and 20 years at Purdue University as an adjunct professor.
Gene coached the Franklin College women’s basketball team for 10 years and also served as the President of the Franklin College alumni association.
Gene has always been available to give back to the community and has acted as an ambassador for Milan, traveling and telling the story wherever and whenever he can.
Gene has been married to his wife, Anita, for 59 years.
