(Greensburg, IN) – Four lawmakers who represent all or portions of Decatur County at the Statehouse gathered at the Greensburg City Hall Multipurpose Room Friday afternoon for the 2026 Legislative Update.

State Senator Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg/Senate District 42), representatives Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville/House District 73), Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville/House District 55), and Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon/House District 67) each delivered opening statements about bills they are authoring or keeping a close eye on during the current legislative session.

All four talked about how legislation may be intended to do one thing, but can be changed dramatically through amendments.

One of the examples was House Bill 1333, authored by Rep. Kendall Culp, which called for regulating data center expansion and land use. The legislation initially included provisions to expedite development on certain agricultural land, but this is facing revisions – which reflects ongoing tensions between rapid technology infrastructure growth and local community control over land use.

After the lawmakers spoke, the floor was opened for a question and answers from the audience.

House Bill 1333 and other aspects of local control, such as education and government services, were among the topics.

The event was presented by the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Decatur County Memorial Hospital.

Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce board president and local attorney Lora Williams served as the moderator.
