Indiana House GOP to try veto override on trans girls sports ban legislation

STATEHOUSE — Indiana House Republicans will try to override Gov. Eric Holcomb’s veto of House Enrolled Act 1041 when the legislature convenes on May 24 for Technical Corrections Day.

The bill would ban transgender girls from playing K-12 sports.

State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland) authored the bill and is a former Division I college athlete.

“This bill is especially important as we mark the 50th anniversary of the enactment of Title IX giving women athletes the right to an equal opportunity in sports,” Davis said. “Hoosier girls deserve better and that’s why I look forward to taking action to override this veto.”

A simple majority vote would be needed in the House and Senate to override the veto.

Gov. Holcomb said he vetoed the bill because there is no evidence to support that there’s an existing problem with K-12 sports in Indiana.

House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) responded by saying females deserve “equal opportunities on the playing field.”
