SWITZERLAND COUNTY, IN — A Switzerland County woman lost her life last Saturday while trying to drive across a flooded creek crossing on Bud Ballard Road.
Sheriff Brian Morton says 55-year-old Danielle Northcutt was able to call 911 after her vehicle was swept off a dry ford crossing into the creek but rescuers could not arrive in time.
Northcutt was unable to escape and is believed to have drowned in her vehicle, which was found mostly submerged several hundred feet downstream from the creek’s crossing.
Heavy rain the previous night caused the creek to flood and covered the dry ford along Bud Ballard Road.
Motorists are reminded of the risks and dangers associated with entering floodwaters and fast-moving currents either in a vehicle or on foot.
Authorities urge you to use alternate routes in the event you come upon a flooded roadway.
