Lexington, Ky. — Beginning in July of 2018, high school students in Kentucky must pass a civics test before meeting graduation requirements. Kentucky lawmakers passed the bill and governor Matt Bevin signed it promptly into law.
The law asks the Kentucky Department of Education to develop and administer a 100 question test, students must get 60 percent of the responses correct in order to get a regular diploma.
Some requirements of the law are:
- Local boards of educations will determine how the test will be given
- Students my take as many retests as necessary to pass
- A student who has taken a similar test in the last five years do not have to take it again
