Joe Neihardt, 82, passed away on March 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant as the songs he sang. His story began on July 28, 1943, when he was born at home in Orland, Indiana, near the Neihardt farm on Wall Lake. He was the last of 4 generations of Neihardts raised here—a fittingly grounded start for a man who spent his life finding beauty and joy in the simple things.
Joe took pride in learning and was always up for a game of Scrabble. He graduated Valedictorian of Brighton High School in 1961, Pre-Med A.B. from Indiana University in 1965, earned a Certificate for Physical Therapy from The Ohio State University in 1966, and an MBA of Health and Hospital Administration in 1970 from the University of Florida. His career included St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ft. Wayne, IN, The Georgia Warm Springs Foundation Hospital in Warm Springs, GA, Worth County Hospital in Sylvester, GA, the Krick Distributing Company in Milan and Madison, IN, King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison, IN and Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA.
Joe was a man of the outdoors. He could almost always be found doing yardwork or trimming a fence row. He didn’t just work, however; he provided the soundtrack for it. His passion was music and being known for his constant whistling and singing, Joe’s presence was a melody that echoed through his home and neighborhood. He gave generously of his time and talents in every community where he lived, and served as a leader in numerous professional, civic and church organizations. He didn’t know a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. He was devoted, loving, smart and funny. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Joe was also the person who brightened every room he entered, both from the smile on his face to the colorful wardrobe he donned. As the family’s resident humorist, he was always armed with a quick wit and a joke for every occasion. A passionate sports fan, Joe remained a loyal supporter of Indiana University basketball, never losing touch with his home-state roots, while also cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes and the University of Florida Gators. There was always a chance for one of Joe’s teams to come out on top.
Papa Joe’s greatest purpose in life was his family and instilling a firm foundation of faith, in Jesus Christ, in their hearts. He is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly Krick Neihardt; his three daughters, Rhonda Kauffman (Steve), Jodie Rich (Matt), and Tonya Neihardt (Craig); and his cherished grandchildren, Christopher Kauffman, Mackenzie Kauffman, Micah Rich, Sarah Porter, and Lilly Rich. He is also survived by his sister Alice Neihardt Rice and many nieces and nephews. He was a man who taught his family that a well-kept yard, a good laugh, strong relationships, and a song in your heart are keys to a life well-lived.
No services will be held at this time, but a celebration of life will be planned for a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Milan First Baptist Church, Milan, IN; Star Lodge #225 F&AM, Orland, IN; Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 333, Versailles, IN; Phi Kappa Tau National Foundation, Oxford, OH; or by simply doing an act of kindness in his honor.
