Ziemke helps “Twister’ gain government experience

Indianapolis, In. — An Oldenburg Academy graduate is gaining experience as an intern with Republican state representative from Batesville Cindy Ziemke and her fellow members of the House of Representatives during the 2019 legislative session.

Nathan Hurm, a resident of Batesville, is the son of Robert and Autumn Hurm. He is a Ball State University student working toward a bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science.

As a legislative intern, Hurm corresponds with constituents through phone calls, letters and emails while also staffing committee hearings and floor proceedings.

“The internship program at the Statehouse is a great opportunity for college students and recent graduates to build a network and gain professional experience,” Ziemke said. “Our interns do valuable work throughout session and help ensure things run smoothly, and interning allows them to gain skills they can carry with them throughout their careers.”

Each year, the House of Representatives offers paid internship opportunities to college students, law-school students, graduate students and recent college graduates for the duration of each legislative session.

“This internship has taught me a lot,” Hurm said. “My time-management and organizational skills have improved greatly, and the experience has opened doors to new professional opportunities. I recommend other college students look into the House internship program.”
