Westport man arrested for OWI after nearly crashing into Police

Columbus, IN — A Westport man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated earlier Friday morning after he nearly crashed into a Columbus Police Department (CPD) patrol vehicle with his child in his truck early Friday morning.

Shortly before 2 am, a CPD patrol officer observed a truck traveling north in the southbound lanes of Central Avenue near 7th Street. The wrong-way driver nearly struck the CPD officer’s vehicle and he stopped the suspect, who was later identified as Anthony W. Harris, 43, of Westport a short time later.

While speaking with Harris, the officers alleged that Harris’s balance was poor and his movements were lethargic. The officers also observed that Harris’s young child was in the vehicle with him. The officers gave Harris a portable breath test and the test showed his breath alcohol content was .147%.

Harris was transported to the Columbus Regional Hospital for a certified blood-alcohol test. At the conclusion of the test, Harris was placed under arrest. He was later remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail and charged on allegations of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated-Endangerment and Neglect of a Dependent.
