Wanda Michel Freeman, 75, of Shelbyville, formerly of Milan, passed away Friday, April 22, 2016 at her residence.
She was born to the late George Leslie “Les” and Esther A. (Dunbar) Michel in Milan, on June 19, 1940.
Wanda was a devoted mother to her son, Michel Freeman and wife, Lana, of Morristown; daughter, Michelle Butler and husband, Scott, of Charles City County, Virginia; a loving sister to, Marilyn Struckman and husband, Cletus, of Milan, and Jo Ann Negangard of Florida. She is also survived by two grandsons, Mike and Ed Freeman; four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kember, Lance and Madeline; three nieces, Kerri, Jodi and Jeana; a nephew, Cory; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Leslie Michel; and a sister, Rita Jo Michel.
Wanda was a graduate of Milan Junior/Senior High School in the Class of 1958. She graduated from St. Frances Nursing School in Cincinnati in 1960. Later she graduated from Mid-America Mortuary College in Jeffersonville in 1991, where she was a member of Alpha Pi Eta Fraternity of Embalmers and Surgeons.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and also First Christian Church, both in Shelbyville. Wanda was also a member of the Friendly Fenns Home Economics Club.
Wanda enjoyed volunteering at Major Hospital. She was a voracious reader, an avid shopper and enjoyed going to the movies. Wanda loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit many different places.
It was very special to her to go on and reminisce about the “cousins’ weekend trips” she took with her sister, Marilyn and their cousins, Jane Feurer, Vicki Caldwell and Patricia Taylor.
Wanda retired from nursing at Especially Kidz in Shelbyville, with eight years of service. Previously she had been a Head Start Nurse/Health Coordinator from 1971 to 1986, in Switzerland, Ripley and Dearborn Counties in Indiana. She was also a nurse at several different hospital and nursing homes throughout her career.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2016 at Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at the funeral home. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mud Pike Cemetery near Delaware.
Wanda’s family would like to thank her close friends, Sara Weddle, Emma Horner, Jenny Riddle, Janet Kelly and the late Pat Musgrave and the many others who have been there supporting us with their companionship and friendship. We would also like to thank Seniors Helping Seniors and Our Hospice of South Central Indiana for their support and guidance during this time.
