BATESVILLE, IN — A major traffic headache in Batesville has been alleviated.
Walnut Street/State Road 229 has reopened following months of utility replacement.
The final phase of the project will take place in the Spring and Summer of 2022 when the Indiana Department of Transportation repaves and resurfaces 229.
“I know this was difficult for our businesses on Walnut and surrounding homeowners to navigate during the project,” said Mayor Mike Bettice. “Our utilities in this area have not been upgraded since the 1930s and this project will benefit the citizens of Batesville for generations.”
Meantime, the first in a series of Next Level Roads: INDOT Community Crossing Grant projects will start Monday at 7 am when work begins on Mitchell Avenue.
That project is expected to be finished around October 12.
The main campus of Margaret Mary Health will still be accessible, but motorists will have to enter Mitchell Avenue from State Road 46.
The City of Batesville issued a statement about the start of the Mitchell Avenue project.
“The City strongly supports our small business community and acknowledges the inconvenience this much-needed project will have on select businesses and homeowners. Feel free to reach out to the City with additional inquires,” the statement reads.
