Virginia “Jenny” (Phipps) Hammons, 85, Dillsboro

           Virginia “Jenny” Hammons, 85, of Dillsboro passed away Monday, August 30, 2021, at The Waters of Dillsboro-Ross in Dillsboro, Indiana. Jenny was born on Wednesday, November 20, 1935, in London, Kentucky and the daughter of John and Gustava (Bryant) Phipps. She married her husband, William “Bill” Hammons, on October 15, 1954, and he preceded her in death on December 15, 2018. Jenny worked at various jobs throughout her life such as babysitting, working at the Osgood Shoe Factory and being a mother and bookkeeper for her husband’s Sinclair Station in Dillsboro. She enjoyed cycle riding with her late husband Bill and camping with family and friends. Her greatest passion in life was raising their 3 children together and enjoying their grandchildren when they could.

Jenny will be missed by her sons William (Cindy) Hammons of Kansas and David Hammons of Milan; daughter Rhonda (Ron) Amm of Dillsboro; brothers Elvin, James, and Jesse Douglas Phipps; sisters Judy Heck and Sharon Elbrecht; grandchildren William Christopher, Corey David, and Alyssa Jonell Hammons, and Ronald J. Amm; great grandson Jaxton Hammons; several nieces and nephews. Jenny was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Sally Hacker and Thelma Johnson, and brother Elmer Phipps.

Family and friends may gather in remembrance of both Jenny and Bill on Thursday, September 2, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a service immediately following at noon at Filter-DeVries-Moore Funeral Home in Dillsboro with Pastor Tom Holt officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Full military rites in remembrance of Bill will be provided. Memorials may be given in honor of Jenny to the Alzheimer Association, American Cancer Society, or the Disabled Children’s fund.
