Vergie M. Bane, 86, of Batesville, Indiana, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at The Waters of Batesville nursing home.
She was known for her sweetness and kind heart, and she was happiest when surrounded by her entire family. She especially cherished being “Mamaw” to her 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Born on June 20, 1939, to parents Oscar and Freda in Barbourville, Kentucky, she grew up with three sisters, Ruby Lawson, Ruth Barrett, and Audrey Johnson (deceased), and one brother, Kenneth Jones (deceased). After high school graduation, Vergie attended business school in Cincinnati, Ohio, and upon graduation moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she worked as a photographer’s assistant.
She eventually moved back to the Cincinnati area and began working at American Motors, where she and Bob first met and married shortly thereafter. They were married for nearly 65 years.
Vergie and Bob eventually moved the family from Ohio to the Batesville area in the late sixties, where they began life on the farm. After staying home to raise her children in their early years, Vergie used her talent for sewing to land a job with the Schnadig International Furniture company (Rushville), where she worked until her early retirement.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; her four children, Freda Bane-Prastitis (Ted), Bobby Bane, Jr. (Wanda), Teresa Devaul (Stuart), and Donny Bane (Beth); 13 grandchildren, Kara Whittington (James), Stephanie Feller (Eric), Rachel Prastitis, Aurora (Nora) Prastitis, Willard Devaul (Jenna), Charles Devaul, Augustus Devaul, Amy Mehlon (Joe), Andrew Bane, Adam Bane, Abraham Bane, Asa Bane, and Amos Bane; as well as eight great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Waters staff for treating Vergie with warmth and kindness as if she were their own mom or grandmother.
Vergie’s funeral will be held at Meyers Funeral Home on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Visitation will be from 9:30–11:00 a.m., followed immediately by the funeral service. After the service has concluded, Vergie will be buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville, Indiana.
