Two local schools see COVID-19 positive students

Franklin and Decatur County, IN Both the Franklin County Community School Corporation (FCCSC) and South Decatur Schools notified parents Tuesday of each having a student test positive for COVID-19 (in no known relation).

FCCSC stated in its parent letter that the student was last in attendance at school on Friday. Upon notification of the positive result, the school implemented its COVID-19 protocol and began working with the Franklin County Health Department to provide seating charts, bus information, and more to help identify those whom the student had come in contact with through the middle school. It is noted in the letter, the Franklin County Health Department determined it is safe for students to continue and that the school can remain open at this time.

Decatur County Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Jarrod Burns noted, in the letter to South Decatur parents, that they are working closely with the Decatur County Health Department after notification of the ill student. The individual that tested positive will be in home isolation for at least 10 days and 24-hours fever-free in accordance with the Indiana State Department of Health’s guidance. The bus in question has already been deep cleaned and is completely safe to be on.

Both school systems noted this is an important reminder that social distancing, wearing masks, and proper sanitizing practices do work. Also, they understand there will be positive cases throughout the school year, but one positive case won’t necessarily shut down a school like it did in March.
