(Greensburg, IN) – Two men are facing charges in a case involving bribery and the attempted trafficking of contraband into the Decatur County Detention Center.
The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation began on August 10 when inmate William Shelton allegedly spoke with a detention deputy and handed the deputy a note with a name and phone number written on it.
Shelton allegedly told the deputy to call the number and set up a meeting where the deputy would receive the package and bring it into the Detention Center.
The deputy was reportedly told they would be paid $2,000.
The sheriff’s office says the deputy reported the conversation to a jail supervisor, who then contacted a road deputy.
The investigation continued over the next seven days, with a sheriff’s detective having numerous text and phone conversations with the person identified when the note was passed to the detention deputy.
Jailhouse conversations between Shelton, John Yorn, and the detention deputy were also monitored.
The investigation concluded Thursday evening, and charges were filed on Friday against 43-year-old William Shelton and 38-year-old John Yorn.
Both were arrested and charged with Bribery and Attempted Trafficking with an Inmate (both counts are Level 5 felonies).
