Bulldog Harriers Champs At Greensburg
The Batesville High School XC Team finished out their regular season tonight as they traveled to Greensburg to compete in their 9 team Invitational.  The Bulldogs came home finishing the regular season with two team champions.

The girls beat the field by 23 points and the boys by 12. Girls scored a low 30 points with Greensburg to follow at 53, East Central 3rd with 68, South Decatur 4th with 123, Franklin County with 134 to round out the top 5.  On the boys side, Batesville scored 50 to Greensburg’s 62 nudging past East Central who had 69. Connersville was 4th at 82 and Franklin County again finished at the top 5 at 133 points.

The girls raced first with some pretty uneasy skies lingering and about halfway through the race, the rain came down and so did the wind, making the last part of the race quite challenging.  But the dogs pushed through and all 7 varsity runners placed in the top 12 of the race. Ava Hanson continues to lead the Bulldogs and came in 2nd (20:16) behind Greensburg’s Brenner Hanna. (20:07). Sophie Myers placed 5th (20:30) with teammate Maria Lopez(20:32) right by her. Lily Pinckley was the 4th Batesville’s runner across the line in 8th place followed closely by Megan Allgeier in 9th, Madison Rahschulte, 10th and Trysta Vierling 12th.  Way to go ladies.  On the JV side for the girls, Batesville took the 7 of the top 10 spots. Carley Pride again led the Dogs with a time of 22:56. Katie Olsen was 2nd with Sarah Ripperger close behind in 3rd. Ella Moster, crossed next for Batesville and amazingly with the running conditions ran a personal best for the season and her 1st year! Way to go Ella.  She also placed 5th with Jen Dodge closely behind her in 6th.  Finishing the top 10 and placing 9th and 10th were Jada Eisert and Hope Kroen.

By the time the boys stepped up to the start line and ready to race, the rain and wind had stopped and the sun came back out making for tremendously better running conditions.  Batesville led the meet with the one/two punch of Benjamin Moster (16:59) and Ean Loichinger (17:14).  Eli Loichinger was the 3rd Bulldog to cross the line in 9th (18:09), Dillon Murray in 16th (18:27), Landon Gutzwiller (missing a PR by a second…18:41) was 22nd with Kyler Daulton close behind in 28th. Finishing out the top 7 was Luke Nuhring placing 44th.

Placing 9th in the JV race was Sean Callahan.  Way to go boys!

Batesville now has just over a week to prepare for the tournament season as Sectional competition will be next Saturday at Moores Hill Elementary School.  Good Luck Dogs!

Lady Bulldogs 7th Graders SEI Volleyball Champs-8th Runners Up
The BMS Seventh Grade Volleyball Team captured the SEI Volleyball Tourney title by defeating a scrappy Greendale team. Scores were 25-23; 18-25; 15-13. The Lady Dogs were offensive-minded but the Lady Bengals kept the ball alive for many long, highly contested rallies throughout the match. To put it simply, when the game was on the line, though, the Lady Bulldogs rose to the challenge. Grace Walter and Jade Martin led the team with 7 service points each including 4 aces and one ace respectively. Reesa Zimmerman and Ava Walsman scored 4 service points a piece in the winning effort. Walter was 16 for 18 spiking with a team high 6 kills. Addison Luers went 10 for 11 in attacks with 4 kills, while Reese Zimmerman was 6 for 7 hitting with a kill. Walsman also had a kill in the front line. Anya Richey, Macy Young, Briley Broshears, Addilyn Froehling, Izzy Meadows, and Ashlee Sparks were all contributors to the team’s title run and win. We are so proud of the way you represented BMS! The team’s final record was 12-3, including 11 straight victories! A SEI Championship Trophy was a great way to cap a fun, successful season!

The BMS 8th grade volleyball team lost to Greendale 25-20, 25-13 in the finals of the SEI tourney.  The team had a lead in game 1, but Greendale’s strong serves helped them gain the lead.  The team played hard, but could not get the momentum they needed to win the game. The team ends with an impressive 12-3 record.  Good Job girls!

Lady Pirates Fall Short Against Lady Spartans
Greensburg Lady Pirates Soccer started the evening out once again honoring some of Greensburg Community High School faculty. Senior Teni Kramer honored her Influential Faculty Member Steve Holland. She explained “I was forced out of my comfort zone, especially in writing, and I think that made me become not only a better student but also a better person. I cannot thank him enough for pushing me to be better and for making class enjoyable.”

Senior Hilary Ernstes also invited Nicole Batta to be recognized. Ernstes said “The educator of the year is an understatement when it comes to this crazy teacher. Batta, you deserve everything truly amazing in life and nothing less, and I’m sure that anyone here could agree with me. You’re an amazing teacher and you’re gonna do so many great things for kids in the future.”

Thank you, Mr. Holland and Ms. Batta, for being a mentor to our community.

The visiting Spartans were stunned early. Only four minutes ran off the clock and Greensburg found the first point of the game. Some great team passing escorted the ball downfield where Emily Rosales made the goal. Five minutes later the Spartans tied the game. The Lady Pirates found themselves down 3-1 at the half.

The second half would again show a good passing game from the Pirates. An assist from Mykenzi Morlan would again find Emily Rosales for her second point of the game. This would prove to not be enough and the Pirates fell to the Spartans 5-2.

Keeper Ella Lowe was met with 33 shots on goal and managed to stop all but 5.

This brings the Pirates to 5-9 on the season and 1-6 in the conference. The last regular-season game is this Saturday against Triton Central at home. Come out and cheer on the Ladies. Game time is 10 am.

Bulldogs Capture EIAC Crown With OT Win Over Spartans
The Batesville Bulldogs traveled to Connersville to compete in the final conference match of the season winning 4-2 on PK’s.

So far Batesville had been undefeated in conference, so we were playing to win the Conference title. The match was very physical on both ends and most of the match went from free-kick to free-kick. Connersville packed the back and attempted to find their 2 leading scorers, but Batesville’s defense held up. The Bulldogs struggled to break through the tight defense on the narrow field which ultimately resulted in a 0-0 tie.

The game went into overtime with a similar fashion until the clock ran down. The final part of the match went into a penalty shootout to determine a winner. Every player framed their shot for the Bulldogs, but the keeper managed to stop one PK. Ethan Brewer again had an outstanding performance. He saved the second and third PK which resulted in a win for Batesville.

The Bulldogs go undefeated in conference and earn the Conference title. Our next focus is on Sectionals!

Lady Eagles Volleyball falls to Lady Raiders
The JCD Lady Eagles fell to the South Ripley Raiders in 4 sets in its final conference matchup for the 2020 season. After a strong start in the first set, things began to unravel quickly and nothing seemed to go the Eagles way especially in the last two sets. The final score was 1-3 (20-25, 25-20, 25-7, 25-12).

Eagles Coach Cat Schmeltz Comments.  ‘I was concerned about how we would react tonight since we have not played in 9 days. As competitive as we made the practices over the last week and a half there is no real way to simulate match play in practice. We were slow to get to balls at the net and in the back row and our serve receive was off tonight. This group of kids has made tremendous strides this season and this loss was a bit of a mental setback for them but it’s also a valuable teaching moment. We look forward to picking ourselves back up and finishing this season on a positive note.’
