Thelma R. Blanken, age 84 of Batesville, died Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Margaret Mary Health. Born September 24, 1933 in Batesville, she is the daughter of Hilda (Nee: Billman) and Henry Riehle. She married Ralph Blanken June 18, 1955 at St. Louis Church and he preceded her in death January 16, 2009. Thelma and Ralph were owners of the Poppers and Nobby Clothing Stores in Brookville and Batesville for over 20 years before retiring in 2000. She was also a member of St. Louis Church and the Daughters of Isabella.
Relationships were important to Thelma. She treasured her family and was a good friend as well. She stayed in contact with former employees from the stores who became “adopted” family. After retiring, she and a group of friends regularly met for breakfast and being fond of Bridge, Thelma belonged to a card club that also met regularly.
She is survived by her daughter Beth Chilson of Ft. Collins, Colorado; son Roger Blanken of New York, New York; sister Ruth Moorman of Batesville and five grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by her brother Larry Riehle.
Visitation is Friday, June 29th, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30th at St. Louis Church with Rev. Stan Pondo officiating, followed by burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Louis School or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
