(Madison, IN) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with Wednesday afternoon’s deadly shooting at a state park.
Indiana Conservation Officers say 33-year-old John Dean McElwaney was arrested shortly after law enforcement received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting the shooting around 3 p.m., and they arrived at the parking lot near the North Gate of Clifty Falls State Park in Madison.
The body of 47-year-old Joseph Renee Lane was discovered near the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the chest.
McElwaney was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a preliminary voluntary manslaughter charge (Level 2 felony).
Investigators say McElwaney underwent an evaluation and medical clearance before he was jailed.
A motive for the killing hasn’t been disclosed.
Both the victim and the suspect are from Georgia.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division says it’s receiving collaborative support from several agencies in the investigation.
