Sunman Marshal fired; town issues statement on the matter

SUNMAN, IN — The Town of Sunman is without a town marshal after he was fired this week.

Jason Hoffman was reportedly terminated over a fundraiser for a non-profit organization known as the Greater Sunman Police Association, along with other undisclosed reasons.

The firing came during a special session of the Sunman Town Council on Tuesday.

The news of Hoffman’s dismissal quickly made its way through town.

Theodore Taylor’s wife Lisa manages Trees Mobile Home Park in Sunman and voiced his concerns to WRBI.

“I’m upset because we have 100 tenants here, and people have been constantly coming to us, asking who do they call for certain problems,” he said.

The town released the following statement Friday afternoon:

“The Sunman Police Department is a taxpayer-funded entity, employed by the Town of Sunman, and managed by the Town Council. This police department consists of the town marshal, deputy marshal, and several reserve officers.
“The Sunman Town Council will not comment publicly on the private matters that are protected by the employer/employee relationship. We will confirm that we are actively conducting a search for a new Marshal.
“Serving the taxpayers of our community is our primary objective and a job that we do not take lightly. We are taking every measure necessary to ensure that our town has the appropriate people, equipment, and plans in place to keep our citizens safe.
“We would like to clarify that the Town of Sunman does have police coverage and at no time has the town been compromised or without law enforcement support.”
