Summer Study Committees On the Clock

(Statehouse) – Almost everyone has medical bills.

They’re almost never reasonable and the financial consequences that come with not being able to pay them off can be tough.

Indiana lawmakers are looking for ways to help Hoosiers by lightening those consequences or preventing them in the first place.

This summer’s “summer study” includes looking at the possibilities of putting caps on monthly payments, limits on collections or garnishments, and possibly new rules for billing.

The Courts and Judiciary Study Committee is expected to look into it and hear testimony.

Members of the General Assembly announced the agenda for the study committees Wednesday.

The list of considerations also includes some Artificial Intelligence (AI) matters and teacher salaries for K-12 public education, as well as the possibility that the Indiana Department of Education could establish a water safety curriculum.

While the meetings can produce material that is considered for the formation of new laws in next year’s legislative session, no action of that sort is taken during the summer hearings.
