Greensburg, In. — The spring line up for the spring edition of Chautauqua has been announced. Through Facebook organizer John Pratt made the following announcement:
I am pleased to announce that the spring Greensburg Chautauqua will be celebrating “The Cowboy Way” as we welcome Riders in the Sky on Thursday April 4th, 2019 at 7 PM. This will be our first full concert by one artist. The daytime will once again be filled with inspirational speakers.
Ranger Doug, Woody Paul, Too Slim and Joey the Cowpolka King have kept the flame going for western music established by the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers, and Gene Autry. Recipients of two Grammy Awards (one for “Woody’s Roundup” from Toy Story 2) and members of the Grand Ole Opry since 1982, the hall of fame group has performed over 6100 concerts. Riders Radio Theatre ran for eight years and they have made countless TV appearances.
The Riders in the Sky concert will coincide with numerous trailblazer activities as my students commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first modern settlers to our area (Decatur County incorporated in 1822.)
Tickets for the show will go on sale soon so plan on making Chautauqua part of your holiday gift purchases. The family friendly show is sure to be a hit for all ages!
The Chautauqua Movement sought to bring learning, culture and, later, entertainment to the small towns and villages of America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Pre-Civil War roots of the effort existed in the lyceum movement, which paid prominent personalities handsomely to give speeches on religious, political and scientific topics to gatherings in the hinterlands. This was an approach to adult education that underscored the values of an era in which common people were expected to stay close to job and family. Enlightenment, if any, had to be taken to them. Travel and vacations were the preserves of the wealthy.
