Bloomington, In. — Indiana University graduate and first African American to be drafted by a NFL team, George Taliaferro has died at the age of 91 in Bloomington. A native Hoosier, Taliaferro starred on the only football team in school history to go undefeated in 1946.
In the 1949 NFL Draft the Chicago Bears selected him in the 13th round. Instead of going to the Bears he opted to play for the Los Angeles Dons of the All-American Football Conference. After earning “Rookie of the Year” he went to the NFL, to the New York Giants. He also played for the Dallas Texans, Baltimore Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring in 1955.
