South Decatur volleyball hosted and won the Cougar Classic on Saturday. It was South Decatur over Switzerland County 25-18, 25-15 in the first game. The Cougars won the championship by dispatching Crothersville 25-12, 25-9.

The Batesville girls cross country team won the East Central Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs posted a 31 while the host Trojans had 42. Batesville was led by second place individual runner Ava Wade (20:00.7), while Jayla Bedel was right behind in 3rd place (20:01). EC came in second in the boys race with 54 while Batesville posted a 60. Bulldog senior Ethan Rahschulte (17:59) finished in 4th place individually while sophomore Levi Essick  (18:09) came in 5th.

The Greensburg boys and girls cross country teams both came in 5th and had individual first place finishers at Saturday’s Columbus North Classic. Pirate senior Joe Hawkins won the boys race with a time of 15:34, while Greensburg freshman Eleanor Davis took the girls race at 18:47.

Batesville boys tennis won the Richmond Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored 55 points and took four out of five positions on the day.

The Reds held off the New York Mets 3-2 in the series finale yesterday afternoon at Great American Ball Park in a game heard on WRBI. Hunter Greene gave up just one hit and one run with a career-tying 12 strikeouts and two walks over seven innings to get the win. Cincinnati took two out of three games in the series and trails New York by four games for the final National League Wild Card spot. The Reds embark on another West Coast road trip when they open a three-game series tonight in San Diego against the Padres. Lefthander Nick Lodolo is scheduled to make the start for Cincinnati. Coverage begins at 9:10 on 103.9 FM.

In NFL opening week action yesterday, the Cincinnati Bengals squeaked past the host Cleveland Browns 17-16. It’s the Bengals first opening week win since 2021. Joe Burrow was 14 of 23 passing for 113 yards and a touchdown toss to tight end Noah Fant. Chase Brown had a rushing TD for Cincinnati…The Indianapolis Colts rolled over the Miami Dolphins 33-8 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Daniel Jones passed for 272 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores in his debut as Colts quarterback. Indianapolis wins its season opener for the first time in 11 years.

The Indiana Fever went on the road and crushed the Washington Mystics 94-65 in WNBA action yesterday afternoon. With the win, the Fever clinched a playoff berth for the second consecutive year. Natasha Howard led Indiana with 17 points. Aliyah Boston added 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Fever improves to 23-20 and will host the Minnesota Lynx in the regular season finale tomorrow night.

The latest college football coaches’ poll has been released. Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia, LSU, and Oregon are the top five teams for a second straight week. Despite having the week off, Notre Dame rose a spot to number eight, and Indiana climbed two spots to number 19. As for the AP Poll, the Irish are also at number eight, but the Hoosiers are ranked 22nd. Indiana faces Indiana State this Saturday. Notre Dame has Texas A&M.
