In other boys hoops games on Saturday, Milan rolled over Switzerland County 76-49; Oldenburg topped Waldron 51-39; South Ripley went on the road and knocked off Lawrenceburg 70-39. The Raiders’ Eli Gilpin threw in a game-high 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and Blake Gunter added 14; it was South Decatur over New Washington 71-55; Tri got past North Decatur 46-40; Trinity Lutheran grounded Jac-Cen-Del 76-50, and Harrison (Ohio) bounced East Central 40-28.
Franklin County girls basketball dumped South Dearborn 48-34 on Saturday; South Decatur rolled Brown County 51-33, and it was Southwestern (Hanover) over Jac-Cen-Del 75-29.
Several local boys wrestlers have advanced to next weekend’s regional competition following Saturday’s sectional at South Dearborn. Milan will send eight wrestlers to the Richmond regional, including five individual weight class champions: Mason Baylor, Matthew Baylor, Kolton Harris, Beckett Langferman and Carson Ellis, plus 2nd place finishers: Jake Roell, Jayden Disbro, and Kayden McClellan. Batesville has three moving on: weight class champs Carson Weiler and Adam Brewer plus runner up Huston Cook. And East Central had three weight class winners: Nyden Euson, Jaxson Prater, and Brody Wingate. East Central won the team sectional championship. Milan finished second, while Franklin County was third. Greensburg came in seventh in the team standings while Batesville finished eighth.

ESPN is reporting the Cincinnati Reds and Eugenio Suarez have agreed on a one-year, $15-million contract with a mutual option for 2027. Suarez hit 49 home runs and drove in 118 while splitting time between Arizona and Seattle last year. He’s expected to primarily serve as a designated hitter for the Reds this season. Suarez was a fan-favorite when he played for the Reds from 2015-2021.
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been added to AFC Pro Bowl team. It’s Burrow’s third Pro Bowl nod. He joins quarterback Joe Flacco and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins in representing the Bengals at the Pro Bowl Games, which will be played in San Francisco tomorrow night.
In college basketball, the Indiana Hoosiers took UCLA to two overtimes on Saturday in Los Angeles, and they came away with a 98-97 victory. Turnovers were a problem for the Hoosiers at the end of regulation, which allowed the Bruins to erase a 10-point IU lead. It was Trent Sisley who sealed the deal in the second overtime with a free throw with less than a second left. Reed Bailey led Indiana with 24 points. That’s three wins in a row for the Hoosiers who will face USC in LA on Tuesday…
The Purdue Boilermakers got a much-needed win in dominating fashion on Sunday when they crushed Maryland 93-63. Fletcher Loyer scored 29 points to lead Purdue. The Boilers also shot a season-high 15-of-30 from behind the three-point arc. The win snaps a three-game losing streak. Purdue returns home to face the Oregon Ducks at Mackey Arena on Saturday.
Former Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza has been named the recipient of the Manning Award, which honors the nation’s top college football signal caller. Mendoza led the Hoosiers to their first ever national championship and a perfect 16-0 season. He also won the Heisman Trophy. Mendoza has declared for the NFL Draft and is expected to be top overall pick.
