Former Reds 1B Joey Votto announced his retirement from baseball on Instagram last night. Votto tried the make it back to the majors after signing a minor league deal with his hometown Toronto Blue Jays, but was hampered all year by an ankle injury. He played this season with the Jays’ Triple-A team in Buffalo. Votto spent 17 seasons with the Reds and hit .294 with 356 home runs. He was the 2010 National League MVP and earned six All Star nods. The 40-year-old Votto ranks second all time in Reds franchise history in homers, doubles (459), first in walks, (1,365), third in runs scored (1,171), fourth in hits (2,135) and fifth in games played (2,056).  He made the announcement moments before the Reds and Blue Jays met for the rubber match of the three-game series in Toronto.

On the field, the Reds topped the Blue Jays 11-7. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz achieved a rare feat when he became a member of the exclusive 20/60 club. De La Cruz stole his 60th base of the year when he swiped third base in the top of the fifth inning. He is just the fifth player since 1900 to hit at least 20 home runs and steal 60 bases in a season. De La Cruz also clubbed his 22nd homer of the season leading off the eighth.
