(Indianapolis, IN) – Speed cameras are now operating in a heavy construction zone on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
The I-69/I-465 interchange has been under construction for some time now. INDOT is moving a speed camera pilot program called “SafeZones” from construction along I-70 on the east side to the busy interchange on the northeast side.
The program is geared towards using speed cameras to catch people speeding in construction zones.
“Right now in Clear Path, we are seeing speeds of 50, 60, up to 80 almost,” said INDOT spokeswoman Kyleigh Cramer. “That zone is 40 to 45. We are not only doing this for the protection of our workers but also the motoring public. As four out of five people who are killed in work zones are either the driver or passenger.”
The cameras are now in operation in the I-69/I-465 interchange.
Cramer said that the data they collected from when the cameras were along I-70 shows a drastic decrease in the average speed of drivers going through a construction zone with workers present.
“The data shows that this is going to be, so far, a very successful pilot program,” Cramer said. “But, also shows it is doing the number one job of reducing speeds.”
She said speeds are down by as much as 70-percent overall.
You will not be given a ticket for the first 30 days of the cameras being implemented at I-69/I-465.
For now, you will simply received a warning in the mail, but after that 30 day trial period is up on February 1st, you could receive a ticket of $75 for a second offense and a third offense and any offense after that will result in a $150 fine.
